Manuel Pellegrini is targeting three Barclays Premier League victories in the next eight days to establish Manchester City in the top four, starting with a trip to Chelsea on Saturday.
Back-to-back league wins, either side of an aggregate triumph against Paris Saint Germain in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, have given Man City a four-point cushion over fifth-placed Manchester United.
And Pellegrini is looking up as Man City aim to close the gap on third-placed Arsenal, who are two points above his team, this weekend.
Defending champions Chelsea suffered their first league defeat this season under Guus Hiddink’s management when they lost 1-0 at Swansea last time out, but Pellegrini still expects a tough test against a team who have rotated their squad due to injuries in recent weeks.
"We don’t know which players they will play,” Pellegrini said. “They are making some changes in every game. But we are sure it doesn't matter which they will play, it will be a difficult game.
“We have important three games and nine points to make sure we are in the Champions League spots next year.

“The target is to try and add as many points as we can until the end of the season and see where we finish. We need to see what we can do to make sure we are in the third or fourth position."
Pellegrini says that Sergio Aguero is fit to face Chelsea on Saturday, while Vincent Kompany (calf) and Raheem Sterling (groin) could return for the trip to Newcastle United on Tuesday. David Silva is out with an ankle problem.
Chelsea welcome back Willian, Gary Cahill and Nemanja Matic from injury this weekend, while Diego Costa returns from suspension.
John Terry (Achilles), Eden Hazard (hip) and Loic Remy (groin) are out of the Man City match.
Hiddink is determined to bounce back from defeat at Swansea and finish his spell as interim manager strongly, with Antonio Conte taking over in the summer.
"When it’s not happening you feel it for a few days, but then you have to regather and refocus yourself and the team as well,” Hiddink said.
"What I have asked from them is to go in to tomorrow’s match and the rest of the matches with ambition and desire to get a good run going in the last games.
"I would like to finish my spell now at Chelsea in the last games with the players showing their quality – from the mental side of things as well.”
